Truck exam study tips: common traps and how to study
This page collects the study methods and exam traps taught in the tips section of Tokutei Transport, so you can prepare with a method. Nothing can guarantee a pass, but knowing how questions are written saves study time.

At a glance
- 2parts to pass separately: 18/30 and 12/20
- 6families of wrong practical options
- 12truck-specific traps
- 1-3-7day review rhythm
1. Remember the part-by-part pass rule
You need 18 of 30 in theory and 12 of 20 in practical, both at the same time. 25 of 30 in theory with 10 of 20 in practical is still a fail. So spread your study across both parts and do not neglect the practical part.
2. Read ○× items like the examiner
The examiner takes a true rule and changes exactly one detail: who acts, when, what, how much, or which number. The sentence still sounds natural, so it is easy to skim past. The reading method in the app:
- Split the sentence into subject, condition and action.
- Notice the words of obligation: 〜なければならない (must), 〜てはいけない (must not), 〜てもよい (may).
- Notice the words of scope: 必ず, すべて, 常に (absolute), 〜だけ (only), 〜とは限らない (not necessarily). Absolute words make a statement easy to fault, but some absolute statements are true, so always check the rule.
- Numbers get swapped: distances, speeds, times. Learn numbers in pairs so you can compare them.
3. Practical part: picture, hazard, safe action
For each A/B/C item, use three steps. Look at the picture for who or what could appear suddenly. Name one specific hazard before reading the options. Then choose the action that prevents that hazard by slowing, stopping, looking or giving way.
Wrong options tend to fall into six families:
- Hurrying.
- Pleasing the customer or the employer against the rules.
- Over-reacting.
- Skipping or shortening a check.
- Trusting equipment instead of your own eyes.
- Assuming it will go your way.
When you miss one, note which family the option you chose belongs to. You will see which kind of mistake you make most.
4. Truck-specific traps
The app's tips section lists 12 truck-specific points. A few worth remembering:
- Overloading (過積載) has no accepted excuse.
- Preventing cargo shift is not just tying down firmly: remember LOAD, TIE, DRIVE (積み付け・固縛・運転方法).
- Not seen in the mirror does not mean nobody is there. A truck's blind spots include the left, the left rear and, for a van body, the rear.
- For left turns allow for the inner wheel difference (内輪差), and for right turns check the left mirror because the tail swings.
- When reversing, do not rely on the camera alone.
- Roll call (点呼) has three moments: before, during and after the trip.
5. Manage the 80 minutes
The app suggests (this is not an exam rule): about 1 minute per ○× item (about 30 minutes), about 2 minutes per practical item because of the pictures (about 40 minutes), and about 10 minutes at the end to return to flagged items. If an item is hard, flag it and move on, because every item is worth the same.
6. Review again instead of reading once
Learn one topic, do the practice items and answer before you look at the solution. Redo the items you missed or hesitated on the next day, on day 3 and on day 7. Sort your mistakes in the error log: missed a keyword, mixed up the subject, or mixed up a condition or exception, and revise that part first.

FAQ
How do I find the changed detail in a ○× item?
Read slowly and split the sentence: who acts, when, what, how much. Watch words such as 必ず, すべて, だけ and 〜とは限らない, because they decide how broad the claim is.
How should I choose in the practical A/B/C part?
Name one specific hazard in the picture before reading the options, then choose the action that prevents exactly that hazard by slowing, stopping, looking or giving way. The answer is usually the safest action, not the fastest.
How often should I review?
The app suggests today, then 1 day, 3 days and 7 days later, redoing exactly the items you got wrong or hesitated on.
Do the tips guarantee I will pass?
No. They are study and reading methods, and each signal is only a tendency with exceptions. You still need to understand the rules and score enough in both parts.
