At a glance

What is roll call (点呼)

点呼(てんこ) is the check in which the driver reports to the operation manager (運行管理者(うんこうかんりしゃ)) and is checked before driving and after finishing. The textbook's keywords for this area are roll call, vehicle inspection and operation management. In the exam the questions usually revolve around who does it, when, and in what way.

Three moments: before, during and after the trip

Roll call has three moments: 業務前(ぎょうむまえ) before the trip, 業務途中(ぎょうむとちゅう) during the trip and 業務後(ぎょうむご) after it. Remember the triple BEFORE, DURING, AFTER. Before and after the trip it is face to face with the operation manager, and by phone if you stay overnight far away.

Mid-trip roll call (中間点呼)

On a trip of 二泊三日(にはくみっか) (two nights, three days) or longer where neither the start nor the end allows a face-to-face roll call with the operation manager, the driver must take at least one roll call mid-trip, by phone or another way of talking directly. It covers alcohol, illness, fatigue and lack of sleep.

Three details are often swapped:

  1. Never take it while driving, not even on a smartphone.
  2. You must carry the operation instruction sheet (運行指示書(うんこうしじしょ)).
  3. Before and after the trip it is face to face with the operation manager, by phone only if you stay overnight far away.

Who must act: driver, manager or company

Questions often swap the subject: driver (運転者), operation manager (運行管理者) or company (会社). Before answering, ask who the sentence is about. For example, refusing an overload is the driver's job, and if the customer insists, the driver tells the operation manager or the company.

Inspection and checks on the road

Vehicle inspection (点検(てんけん)) is part of operations. For cargo on the truck, the textbook says to check the ropes again while driving: every 4 hours on ordinary roads and every 2 hours on expressways, stopping in a safe place. In a breakdown, switch on the hazard lights, slow down and do not switch off the engine until the truck has fully stopped. After causing an accident, the order taught is: stop and help the injured, call 119, move to a safe place, tell the police, then tell the company.
